Club members & Friends - Ride Out over Exmoor - 15th August 2021
Nineteen bikes left the Cross Keys at 09.45am and set off for Minehead, Elworthy Cross, Ralieghs Cross, Washford Cross to Minehead sea front for 1/2 hour comfort stop. Then from Minehead to Porlock (up Porlock hill), Lynmouth, Simonsbath to Winsford for 3/4 hour lunch stop at The Bridge Tea Rooms. Continuing from Winford to Bampton, Elworthy Cross finishing at Otter garden centre, Norton Fitzwarren.
A grand day with a great route, sadly marred by a little bit of rain, but overall the weather was kind to us.
Thanks to Garry for setting the route and leading the way.
Also thank you to our "tail enders" - Richard and Ted

Club members - Ride Out over Exmoor - 13th September 2020
Seven bikes came on the ride out on Sunday 13th September across Exmoor.
Leaving Taunton at 10 am, - Elworthy Cross, Monksilver and Washford to our first stop on Minehead seafront
Minehead had very few bikes on the seafront.
Leaving Minehead we took a scenic route via Webber's post, Horner Woods and Luccombe
Around Dunkery beacon then out to Wells head , through Exford and Winsford to Dulverton . Successfully negotiating steep hills and a ford made the tea and sandwiches we all brought taste all the better. After lunch we made our way back to Taunton via Bampton, Wiveliscombe and Norton Fitzwarren for
Tea and Doughnuts, the perfect end to a day of wonderful weather on a motorcycle.
Many Thanks to Garry for organizing the route.

Annual Charity "Bring 'n Buy Auction Night - 2020
Once again, the evening did not disappoint - a great turnout of Club members at The Ruishton -
Laden with both goods for sale and cash to spend.
Roger Oaten did a grand job as the Auctioneer and £416.10 was raised for the Club's chosen charities.
Thank you to Roger, all Club members who attended and brought items and to those who parted with cash.
The famous "Lobster" is to be "fostered" by Valerie and Barry for the next twelve months.

Hell's Wrinklies Reunion at The Bell Creech - 25th January 2020.
A huge than you is extended to Roger Oaten who has spent months planning (and fretting over) this event.
His worries were totally unnecessary as the evening was a great success.
Thank you also to Val & Kathy who were Roger's "Right Hand Ladies" and of course to
The Landlady at The Bell who made us all very welcome.
A grand display of photos, memorabilia and of course a couple of baseball caps from those Wrinklies Days.
Running constantly during the evening were videos showing various footage from Exmoor Runs,
Good Friday "BBQ" Runs, Christmas Parties and more.
Especially good to see the Tractor Boys who used to join us at The Bell after the BBQ Run.
We all got to see ourselves looking a lot younger, and of course amid the laughter and reminiscing,
we remembered those we saw on the screen who are no longer with us.
These photos are not great quality but I think they capture the mood of the evening!

Vintage Vehicle Meet - New Years Day 2020
We all woke to a miserable, clingy damp morning, but we were not put off!
An excellent display of motorcycles of all ages and marques were to be seen at the vehicle meet.
A huge number of cars and commercial vehicles arrived to be admired by the crowds.
Although we had some light rain, and the dampness was not replaced by sunshine, we all had a good time - studying the vehicles, chatting to fellow enthusiasts, eating breakfast, drinking coffee etc.
May 2020 bring some great motorcycling.

Bath & West Showground
We were once again invited along to display bikes at this show.
Much quieter than the February Bike Show but great to see all the amazing cars and some very good trade stalls to browse and tick items of your shopping lists.
Our bikes received a lot of attention and our stand was busy throughout.
Well done to Andy Webb who won "Best Two Wheels" with his Aermacchi.

Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show - Stafford - October 2019
Another very busy and interesting show.
Hopefully the photographs provide a glimpse into the bikes, not only on show,
but also for sale on trade stands and in the auction rooms.
Also the gradual setting up of a huge expanse of displays, Club stands and trade stalls.

The Somerset Show - September 2019 - Taunton Racecourse
We were invited to take a few classic bikes along to this, the first Somerset Show.
Fourteen interesting bikes were booked in and, as a bonus,
those of us with homes on wheels could pitch up for Friday and Saturday night.
Saturday brought glorious weather with a large number of visitors,
We were a bit tucked away, and dependent on folk viewing the Classic cars to spot our area.
Despite this we had a steady flow of visitors.
However, Sunday started with heavy rain and very few classic cars turned up.
We negotiated to move to an area outside the Portman Stand and we were a bit more high profile.
The weather did cheer up bringing more visitors than expected and the day was
better than we had anticipated.
A good show with loads of stalls - something for everyone - and some very interesting displays in the ring. Plenty to see and do - a great weekend had by all.

The First Apple County Bike Meet was held on Sunday 8th September 2019

and there was an opportunity to ride the new Royal Enfield Himalayan on a dirt track, courtesy of Moto Corsa.
There was a £5 entry charge per bike, with all proceeds going to charity.
The weather was perfect, there was a very friendly, relaxed atmosphere and delicious refreshments.
All set in a stunning location overlooking Curry Moor.
Everyone was asked to vote for their favourite bike and the results were:-
1st A Honda CX650E
2nd A "bobbed" Royal Enfield.
3rd A Triumph Bonneville
Well done to Jason and his friends for organising this get together.
Hopefully this will become a very successful annual event.

Chardstock Street Fair - Saturday 7th September 2019
Our Club had been invited to show bikes at the Chardstock Street Fayre.
Sadly most club members had other commitments, however, Sylv and Colin took three bikes along, and, although theirs were the only ones on show they had a great day.
The main street was closed for the day and filled with craft stalls, street traders and
food stalls - including a fish and chip van.
Two stages meant that a variety of live music was provided throughout the day and into the evening.
The village hall car park was the venue for classic cars and bikes,
with a field for tractors, steam engines and even a tank !
There were snakes and spiders to handle in the church which also hosted the
"who could throw the paper dart the furthest" competition.
The whole village took part with enthusiasm which makes for a fun day

Steam and Vintage Vehicle Rally – August 2019
As always, a great weekend, good weather, vintage vehicles and great company.
Some very unusual bikes on show and a couple deserve a special mention.
1926 Ivy Model “M”. 350cc. Made by S A Newman, Aston Cross, Birmingham. Rare side valve, using an engine of their own manufacture. The only other currently known example is in Steve McQueen’s museum.
1933 James Model E2. 500cc. Four stroke, side valve, V Twin. Bought for a packet of fags and £3 in the 1950s, last ridden in 1957. Fully restored in 2013-2014. It has resided in the Yeovil area all its life and is believed to be the only E2 left.
For the first time, this year a shield was awarded. Independent judges picked the machine they would most like to have in their garage. They chose a 1955 Ariel Hunt Master (650cc) with a Jet 80 Sidecar.
Roger Oaten made a great job of the commentary on both days – not easy with so many lovely machines on show and a tight time slot.
LMS Princess Coronation Class 6233 Duchess of Sutherland was in steam over the weekend and we were honoured with a “drive by” on the main line on Sunday morning. No.46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' is a London, Midland and Scottish Railway Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive built in 1938 by Crewe Works for the London Midland and Scottish Railway.
Not a motorcycle, but a beautiful machine well worth a mention – The McLaren Road Loco –Gigantic was honouring us with its presence. It was designed and built in Leeds to be used for war time work, however, it seems it was never actually put to service and was exported to Australia to work in a quarry. Now back home, rebuilt in 2012, and returned to a War time paint scheme. Loved and cherished by it’s owner – a sight to behold.
Also joining it at the show was a quarter size replica.
On a sad note - John Williams – the motorcycle Marshal of many years has announced that this is the last year he will be carrying out this job.
We will still see him about at the show as he will continue to drive the trains etc.
Thank you very much to John for looking after us all so well.

Somerset Steam & Country Show Low Ham - 20th & 21st July 2019.
Despite a wet start on Friday, Saturday and Sunday stayed dry,
and the ground returned to it's "concrete" like state.
A very enjoyable weekend with Roger Oaten doing his usual excellent job as the
Commentator for the motorcycles as they were ridden around the arena.
It was also great to see the familiar Series 1 Land Rover that used to belong to John Reeves.
Now his son Adam displays it for us to enjoy.

Andy Webb took his Aermacchi to the festival of 1000 bikes this year and met some very famous people.
He felt honoured to meet Giacomo Agostini - the greatest motorcycle road racer ever - and to add to Andy's joy,
Giacomo signed the Aermacchi. Andy has since lacquered over the signature to ensure it does not wear away!
Another famous name in the world of motorcycling came along and sat upon the Aermacchi.
None other than Steve Parrish.
Andy was very happy with the bike's performance on the track,
completing a 1 min 10 sec lap (unofficially timed) 73.63MPH average.
The slideshow below includes some great "action" shots courtesy of Peter Wileman.
All in all it sounds like a great weekend.

The Cabin - July 2019
If you have an hour or two free mid week then go along to the Log cabin Diner - EX36 4RZ - on the A361 Link Road to Barnstaple. Every Wednesday from about 11am to 2pm many mortorcyclists gather.
The bikes range from very old to very new - trikes, side cars - you will see just about everything.

Crofton Beam Engines - Motorcycle Weekend - June 2019
Crofton Pumping Station is one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in the United Kingdom.
It contains an operational Boulton & Watt steam engine dating from 1812 - the oldest working beam engine in the world, in its original engine house and capable of doing the job for which it was installed.
The station was built in 1807-9 to supply water to the highest point of the Kennet & Avon Canal.
At the end of June the engines were in steam and a motorcycle weekend was planned.
A selection of interesting motorcycles were on display, a talk had been arranged, various motorcycle clubs rode out to see the engines and, on Sunday a group of stunning Morris Minors graced the overflow car park.
The beautiful weather and amazing setting all added to this fantastic weekend.
We also discovered a working windmill nearby – a definite bonus.
It was a privilege to be there displaying a bike.
The beams engines are everything you expect and more – poetry in motion –
you can get up close and watch them at work – so smooth and powerful – absolutely fascinating.
If you find yourself in the area do visit, even when not in steam it is a fascinating place to stroll around.
If you are able to be there on the rare weekends when the engines are working then do not hesitate – it is a “must do” on that bucket list.

BBQ In The Blackdowns - June 2019
12 Club members joined James and Liz at their beautiful home in The heart of the Blackdown Hills.
Great food, good company and a bit of sunshine were the ingredients for the afternoon.
An enjoyable time had by all. Thank you very much to our hosts.
We had planned a motorcycle ride prior to the BBQ calling at The Common Loaf Tea rooms.
However, two factors decided we should postpone that plan.
The Tea Room was going to be closed and the weather forecast was horrendous.
Previous rain and more on the day would make the narrow lanes treacherous.
While we were with James and Liz, the heavens opened and we had rain complete with hailstones.
Correct and sensible decision made!

Chelston Nursing Home - "Jar of Dreams" Saturday 8 June 2019
Chelston Nursing Home have a "jar of dreams" for their residents.
David's wish was to see and hear motorbikes. Well we certainly made his wish come true today.
103 bikes of all ages and marques (along with their custodians - also of all ages and marques)
arrived at Chelston Nursing home at 11am today.
The sun shone and so residents were able to be outside, many of them being taken around in wheel chairs
to have a good look at the bikes (and their riders).
Tea, coffee and delicious home made cake was available and donations were made for the
Air Ambulance - a great by product of this event.
David chose a gold trike as his favourite and, with help, he was able to sit on it - his wide grin said it all.
It was truly humbling to be a part of his "dream".
Thank you for all the hard work of the staff at the Nursing Home, making things such as this happen.
Also a special thank you to the "cake baker" - what a great selection of delicious cakes and pastries.

Wells Classic Motorcycle Club - Hare & Tortoise Run - Sunday 2 June 2019
Just four of us this year gathered on Saturday evening to "camp out" in readiness for the run on Sunday morning.
We started the day with a hearty breakfast at the Football Club House - excellent as always.
Sadly, the glorious weather from Saturday did not continue through to Sunday - by 10am the rain was quite hard and as we traveled it got much worse. A lot of very wet riders arrived for tea/coffee and biscuits.
A little glimmer of sunshine gave us all hope but good weather eluded us until much later in the afternoon.
The morning route was splendid, probably the best ever.
A little icing on the cake was, despite being few in numbers from Taunton Club, we managed to hold onto the
"Best Represented Club" Trophy.
Thank you to Chris and Joan Weeks and all the Wells Club members for working so hard to provide a great day.
Looking forward to next year.

Vintage Vehicle Meet - New Years Day 2019
After what seems like months of rain everyday, the sun shone for us on New Years Day this year.
What a difference to the past two years - the lovely weather brought a great turn out of all vehicles and the motorcycles spilled over, way out of the usual parking area.
All ages and types of bikes just kept coming, riders were able to socialise in the morning sun - exchanging New Year Greetings and discussing the bikes on display.
People stayed for much longer than in previous years - not finding themselves frozen to the spot or soaking wet, but enjoying the warmth of this sunshine.

What a great start to 2019.
Roll on the summer!
The Footman James Classic Restoration Show
Bath & West Showground - 3rd & 4th November 2018
We were approached to enter a Club stand at this show.
Historically, it seems to have been mainly cars and now the organisers want to attract all classic vehicles.
We had a great two days at the show - it is much quieter than the February bike show, nonetheless a good weekend taking in the cars and the trader's wares - including the hats!
Our display of motorcycles was well received, judging by the number of visitors we had at our stand.
Congratulations to Andy Webb who won "Most Interesting Motorcycle" with his Aermacchi.

Ride Out on Exmoor - Sunday 2 September 2018
A few bikes gathered for a ride over Exmoor to Minehead via Withypool.
Thanks go to Andy for leading it and sharing his favourite parts of the Moor.

Annual Bike Night at The Skylark, Chelston - August 2018
A good turn out of bikes as the evening was warm and dry.
Mostly modern machines but I did seek out a few old ones to add to the mix of photographs!
Not many familiar faces there and so my pictures are all bikes - no opportunities to people to catch anyone unawares!

West Somerset Steam Fair - August 2018
A great weekend - the weather was amazing and a huge number of exhibits in every section, including 115 motorcycles.
What a privilege to sit outside the beer tent on a balmy Saturday evening surrounded by
Showman's engines providing our light.
Thank you once again to our Motorcycle Marshal - John Williams - who, with the help of his wife, Pam and two friends,
looked after us so well.
Interesting commentary in the ring from Roger Oaten - we are fortunate to have him taking this role each year.
Thank you to everyone who makes this event so successful each year.

Sheppy's Bike Night - 26th July 2018
The weather was glorious and motorcyclists came along in very large numbers,
Just under 1600 bikes gathered in one place - pretty spectacular.
We were treated to a variety of machines, very old to very modern, just about every marque was represented.
Also a good mix of riders - very young to those "not so young".
A selection of trade stands, our very own Club stand, live music and very good burgers all made for a great evening.
Sheppy's is a lovely setting with enough space to accommodate the large numbers.
Thank you for making this happen.
If you go to the "Bike night Sheppy's Cider" face book page you will find lots more photographs

Padstow Vintage Rally & Country fair - July 2018
A few Club members went along to The Padstow Vintage Rally to display motorcycles.
The weather was just perfect and a good time had by all.
Thank you to our Motor Cycle co-ordinator, Tony, his wife and the rest of the organisers
who worked very hard to ensure that everyone had a great weekend.
Camping alongside the motorcycles enabled exhibitors to chat to visitors and answer questions - a successful formula. Definitely a date to note in the 2019 diary - the first complete weekend in July.

It's What Sunday Mornings are For:
Last-minute decision, Colin & Sylv made time for a ride out on Harry (Enfield, obviously, 1961 single - a gorgeous sound, putt-putt-putting through the shady lanes).
Destination: Blue Anchor via Kingston St Mary and Nether Stowey, with a well earned tea stop at Watchet to rest bums that had been sitting on a very narrow seat!
A lovely old guy insisted that his young Grandson watch Colin kick-start Harry. The lad left the ground when it fired, which will undoubtedly put him off old bikes for ever!
The view of Minehead across St Audries Bay was spectacular, and St Audries itself looked serene.
Amazingly, at Blue Anchor the tide was right in, allowing fishermen to leave their rods over the railings
while they sought shade and tea (or beer).
The few cotton-wool clouds above Wales were perfectly reflected in the mirror-like Bristol Channel.
A wait at the Blue Anchor Level Crossing was rewarded by the sight of a lovely steam loco (53808) and its many
[mostly empty] carriages trundling through.
A pause to listen as it pulled away towards Minehead……aaaah, bliss!
(But bet they were even hotter on the foot-plate than it was on a bike on the tarmac).
Home via Washford, passing Old Cleeve and tootling past Coombe Sydenham to Elworthy Cross.
All the pillion hand signals must've been magic: junctions and roundabouts were miraculously clear.
A perfect, perfect day for a ride out.
What an absolute blessing to live within an hour of all this spectacular scenery.

Vintage Vehicle Gathering at Sheppy's Cider - Thursday 21st June 2018
It was certainly the weather for 2018's longest day and Summer Solstice -
the evening brought wall to wall sunshine and blue skies - not a drop of rain in sight!
A great turn out of classic cars, and also well supported by the motorcycle fraternity.
Very tasty, quality burgers and hot dogs on sale plus great looking cakes.
Already looking forward to the bike night on 26 July - hope the weather holds.

Wells Classic Motorcycle Club - Hare, Tortoise & Snail Run
Sunday 3rd June 2018
Those Club members who have "portable homes" stayed overnight at the Football Club Ground in readiness for the
Wells Club Run on Sunday morning.
We always enjoy this weekend and it kicks off with a very good meal at The Wetherspons just along the road.
Back to Colin & Sylvia's caravan for Cheddar strawberries, icecream and cream - thank you very much to them for the desert and allowing us to squeeze into their van.
We awoke to glorious sunshine on Sunday and a great full English breakfast - very tasty and beautifully cooked.
Off to the Square to set off at 10am for a very pretty run to the coffee stop at Castle Cary Rugby Club
and back to Wells for a lunch break.
The afternoon ride took us up Burrington Combe and down Cheddar Gorge - brilliant
All in all, a great day, with some stunning motorcycles to view.
Our Club Member - Andy Webb - won Best Hare on his Ducati Darmah 900SD and
Taunton Classic MC won the Best Attended Club - albeit only by one!
Thank you to Chris and Joan Weeks and all the club members who worked so hard to ensure we all had a
very enjoyable and safe day.

Avalon Vintage Road Run Saturday 2nd June 2018
Vehicles gather from 2.30pm in Glastonbury and depart for Burnham on Sea at 5pm.
As we were camping overnight in Wells we decided to go along and watch at 5pm.
Sadly only a couple of motorcycles (maybe we need to address that next year?), however, we did see some
spectacular cars and trucks.

National Sprint Association - Weston Zoyland - Sunday 13th May 2018
You may recall last year, one of our Club Members - Andy Webb - began taking part in the NSA meet at
Weston Zoyland with his Aermacchi (Entry Number C12).
He is back this year and a few Club Members went along to see him ride on Sunday. He had a good weekend overall, although Saturday was rather disappointing with the bike running badly and misfiring a lot, however, after a good think and lots of tinkering in the evening the bike was much improved and ran really well on Sunday.
His best time of the day was 15.58 seconds with a terminal speed of 87.57.
The top speed was slightly slower than last year’s best, but there was a strong headwind so he was pleased with this result.
Good luck to Andy for the rest of the season.

The Cabin - April 2018
If you have an hour or two free mid week then go along to the Log cabin Diner - EX36 4RZ - on the A361 Link Road to Barnstaple. Every Wednesday from about 11am to 2pm many mortorcyclists gather.
The bikes range from very old to very new - trikes, side cars - you will see just about everything.
Below are some photographs taken on 18th April this year.
We will hope for many more sunny Wednesdays.

Visit to Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum - January 2018
On Sunday 14 January, a group of our Club Members went to The Sammy Miller Museum in Hampshire.
A most enjoyable day, where the group were very well looked after, even arriving to a reserved parking space for the bus!
Sammy himself greeted them and gave them a guided tour of the workshops.
Thank you to Sammy, Museum Staff and especially to Rob Clark who organised this trip.

Vintage Vehicle Meet - New Years Day 2018
The rain eased off at about 9.30am and so off we went - over to Junction 24 of the M5 to the "new" site of Taunton Market. Despite the impending wind and rain, many folk had ridden their beautiful old steeds and driven some stunning vehicles to this traditional gathering. Started, in fact by the late John Reeves in 1989 when Taunton had a market, this gathering has become a popular location to wish everyone
New Year greetings and blow away the festive cobwebs.
Sadly, it did rain quite heavily off and on through the morning - and ironically the afternoon was sunny.
Never mind - a good time was had by all who made the effort to come along.
Maybe we will get the bad weather over and done with now, clearing the way for a
motorcycling spring and summer!

1929 Norton "18" takes it's owner to the 2017 TT
Daren Woolcott regularly brings his Norton on our Club Exmoor Run.
He has won the Oldest Bike Trophy on three occasions and awarded The Best Norton one year.
Sadly, this year he left the Norton at home and came along on a more modern machine.
The reason for this was to give the Norton a rest before it's outing to the TT.
Following a calm crossing, both rider and machine were looking forward to the challenge.
Neither disappointed - the duo lapped the circuit at an average speed of 34mph - the Norton not missing a beat.
The photo below shows them crossing Ballaugh Bridge.
Well done to both.
They had such a great time they have booked to go next year, so sadly we may not see the beautiful Norton on the Exmoor Run - or maybe bike and rider could do both............?

NEW YEARS DAY VINTAGE VEHICLE ROAD RUN
Organised by the Somerset Traction Engine Club (and believed to have been started by the late John Reeves in 1989) this event used to start at The Taunton Market ground and the road run was a amazing site through the town.
Regrettably, the move to Junction 24 no longer lends itself to a road run through Taunton.
However, the road run still takes place and departs at about 11.30am.
2016 New Years Day saw over 400 vintage and classic vehicles on display.
It is a great way to spend a couple of hours and the restaurant serves an excellent breakfast.
The article and photo below appears in The "LOOKING BACK" feature in The Gazette issued today (29/12/2016)

Coast To Coast - Sunday 26 June 2016
Gareth took part in the Westlands Classic Motorcycle Club annual charity run on Sunday - The Coast to Coast. It entails a very early start to meet the other riders at Lyme Regis but the effort is rewarded with a great ride, a lunch stop in Wells and finishing in Burnham on Sea. It was here that Gareth was presented with a shield for the Best BSA. Gareth was riding his A7. Well done Gareth - your bikes are doing you proud - what is the next conquest on the list?

British Bike Night at The World's End - Thursday 23 June 2016
A lovely dry evening brought out some very shiny bikes to be admired at this years British Bike Night.
Loads of photographs taken so here are just a few to give a flavour of the evening.
There were, as always, many stunning "non British" bikes but I have concentrated on the "British" in line with the heading!

Club Run - 29 May 2016
The sun shone and so we set off from The Ruishton Inn at about 10.30am. We were shoched to arrive at Spaxton to find that last nights storms had been much more severe than in Taunton. We had to ride through water, displaced gravel and a lot of mud left behind by flood water. Spaxton residents were busy scraping the mud from their diveways and the road.
We rode across Quantock Common where ponies were looking after their foals.
Stopped for a quick leg stretch and then on through Williton and back towards Cannington.
A detour to see Hinckley A & B and a distinct lack of Hinckley C!
Finally back to Richard's house where he and Nancy provided a very welcome cuppa with cakes and biscuits.
Thank you very much to Richard and Nancy for their hospitaltity and to Richard for planning and leading a lovely ride.
All in all a grand day out.

We were very lucky to have representatives from both The Freewheelers and The Air Ambulance at our January 2016 meeting to receive our "Giant" cheques - £1000 was given to each charity following our 2015 AGM in September.
New Years Day 2016
Good weather, loads of vans, cars, tractors plus a large number of mototocycles and scooters. Most importantly, however, lots of familiar faces and a good hearty breakfast.
